About
History
Summerdale Medical Practice was founded by Dr Neville Fernando who opened a solo practice in Hardwicke Street in 1975. In 1982, the practice relocated to its current site on the corner of Stanley and Peel Streets, which had previously been the site of a quarry / lake.
The practice has seen major expansions and renovations in 1993, 1996 and 2012. In particular, 2012 saw the construction of a dedicated nursing wing with four general nursing bays and one emergency bay in order to better suit our patients’ wide range of medical needs. These expansions have allowed Summerdale to grow significantly from its early days into a busy group practice with fifteen doctors and eight nurses.
Summerdale Medical Practice’s participation in the General Practice training program began in 2004 when Dr Diane Hintum joined as the practice’s first registrar. In the years since, Summerdale has taken an active role in General Practice training, having trained in excess of forty registrars, helping them to gain Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners. Many of the practice’s former registrars have stayed on as long term additions to the practice’s medical team.
Summerdale Medical Practice is proud to have been the first practice in Launceston to offer comprehensive seven day medical care, providing medical services in the evenings, on weekends and also on public holidays for over forty years.
The practice looks forward to celebrating our fiftieth anniversary in 2025. We remain committed to providing quality medical care to our patients in the face of an ever changing medical landscape for many years to come.
